Reserve League

Our reserves continued their good form on Sunday last with a hard fought 3pt victory over Monaghan Harps. Played in condition’s that you would not put the mother in law out in both teams tried hard to play entertaining football. A young latton team worked hard for each other and a D Duffy goal after 10 min was the result of some great one touch football out of defence and a quick ball to the forwards. Monaghan had to wait 24 min for their first score of the half a goal after a slip by the Latton defence. Latton finished the half strong and with D Duffy kicking some great scores went in leading 1-6 to 1-1 at half time. A wicked cross field wind made scores hard to get in the second half with Latton for all their hard work only registering 1pt in the half hour. With the Latton goalie C Brady on top of his game and a hard working defence we were fit to hold out and record the 3pt victory. Latton 1-7 Monaghan 1-4. Team & scorers: C, Brady. C, Mc Elroy. C, Lynch. K, Farrelly. P, Shannon. N, Traynor.J, Nixon. F, Ward. J, Mc Elroy 1pt. M, Duffy 1pt. P, Conlan 1pt. T, Lynch. R, Conlon. D, Duffy 1-3. D, Mc Elroy 1pt.

Reserve League

Magheracloone 2-6 Latton 1-9
In what proved an entertaining game to kick off the season, our Reserves went home fairly satisfied with a draw. It was a keenly contested game from the outset that could have went either way. Latton had a young, spirited team on show, with 11 under- 21s starting. Young guns like Chistopher Rice and Thomas Lynch impressed from the start with the latter getting the opening score. Ryan Conlon bagged a cracking goal before the break to leave the half-time score: Magheracloone 1-3 Latton 1-4. The second half was a tense affair and after a second slackly-conceded goal Latton were on the back foot. However, with Darren McElroy on shooting form, they showed great determination and responded with character to fight back. Niall Traynor made a welcome return with a fine point to equalise at the end.
Team & Scorers: C.Brady, C.Lynch, R.Ward, K.Farrelly, C.Rice, N.Traynor(1pt), J.Nixon, F.Ward(c), J.McElroy(1pt), T.Lynch(1pt), P.Conlan, M.Duffy, R.Conlon(1goal), D.Duffy(1pt), D.McElroy(5pts). Sub used: P.Shannon. We have our second game in the league at home on Sunday against Monaghan Harps with a 2 o'clock throw in.

 Honorary Secretary's Report 2012

I would like to extend a warm welcome to all present here tonight. 2012 has been yet another busy year for the club. Before I begin, I realise that the managers of the various teams and the representatives of the various subcommittees will have their own synopsis prepared, but I’ll just provide a general summary of affairs on & off the field in 2012.

ON THE FIELD

Senior Football Championship

In summary, comparing with our achievements in 2011, it was a disappointing Championship campaign where results tell the story. The tables were well & truly turned in September when we found ourselves comprehensively beaten in Clones by a worthy C’ship winning Ballybay team. ****************

Senior League

Ironically, having come from the dizzy heights of County & Ulster success last year, we found ourselves at the other end of the spectrum in September this year as we played Truagh in what was to prove the key relegation battle. A gutsy performance away from home saw us win by 2pts. These 2pts were the most vital earned this year in securing Senior status. Sincere thanks to the Senior management team (Ruairi Ward, Finbarr Fitzpatrick & John O’Brien) along with their backroom team for their devout 2 year-long dedication. The club also wishes to acknowledge the commitment shown by the large panel of senior players, many of whom had to travel back for matches and training from various parts of the country.

By the same token, we wish our newly-appointed senior manager every success for 2013.

****************

Other Adult teams

The Reserves had another fruitless season in both League & Championship. Their season came to an end in early October when we were beaten by Clontibret in a semi-final playoff in Cloghan. Sincere thanks to the Management team of Alan McEntee, Mark Hughes & Brian McElroy for their commitment all year & for unearthing some good young talent in the club which is sure to emerge in Senior ranks next year.

Under 21s

Our u-21s bowed out on July 17th as they reached the semi-final of the league. Thanks to the management team of Patrick Hamilton & Brendan Fitzpatrick for their work this season.

Minors

On September 8th we were defeated Magheracloone in a Play-off for the last place in the semi-final line up. Thanks to the management team of Brendan McElroy & Ken Farmer for their dedication throughout the year.

****************

Juvenile Football

U 16 Championship
Well done to our u-16s on reaching the final last September but were beaten by a stronger Carrickmacross team in the final under lights in Inniskeen. We would like to thank the management (Paddy Lynch & Mickey McCabe) and the players for their hard work and commitment all year.

U-14 Shield Final
The juvenile competitions came to an end for Latton in September when we were narrowly beaten by Doohamlet in the shield final. Thank you to team management JJ Doherty & Shane Coyle for all their hard work and commitment to this team all year.

****************

Under 12 league final

On Saturday September 1st we travelled to Drumhowan & beat Ballybay in the U-12 Division 3 final. This is the second year this team has won silver ware and special thanks has to go to team management Martin Duffy & Peter West for all their hard work & commitment to this team.

****************

Under 8s & Under 10s

In September our U-10 team successfully retained the Bosco Carroll cup in a four team tournament held in Rockcorry. We beat Aghabog in the semi-final for the right to play Rockcorry in the final. We would like to thank the Carroll family and the Rockcorry club for their hospitality on a well run day. We commend managers Cathal Dempsey & Micheal Duffy for their work on the along with all the other mentors who work throughout the year with this important age-group.

The final Under 10 Go Games blitz of the year took place in Clones on Saturday 22nd September 2012. Overall 23 clubs took part in the blitz, 30 teams in total, with 350 children participating in the blitz. This was the 8th Under 10 blitz of the year. This was the first year that they introduced Double Blitzes, which entailed Under 8′s and Under 10′s playing at the same time at the same venue. This proved very successful.  A sincere thanks to all the players, coaches & parents for their support in ensuring that the Go Games programme in 2012 was a success.

****************

We had the privilege of hosting the Monaghan GAA Cul Camps at our facilities on July 23rd-27th

·         Creating Sustainable Club Coaching Structures – Latton O’Rahilly GAA Club has been selected by the County GAA Coaching & Games Development Committee for this pilot project. In conjunction with Paul O’ Connor, this plan aims to deliver greater club/school links, higher numbers of qualified coaches, and sustain coaching & games development structures for Latton.

****************

Thank you to everyone who turned up to our juvenile fun day and fundraiser on Sunday September 9th. The good weather made all the difference and everyone enjoyed the treasure hunt around the roads. Thank you to Mark & Kevin Hughes for organizing such a fun & productive day, sincere thanks to all our sponsors and everyone who donated prizes for the raffle.

The Under 12 & Under 10 successes along with the work put in as far down as Under-6 level is most encouraging. It’s of paramount importance to the future prosperity of the club that all our juveniles develop into future winners. I'd like to acknowledge all our under-age coaches for the effort and leadership they have given in this regard.

****************

OFF THE FIELD

Scór

In 2012 Latton’s groups yet again contributed greatly to Scór. The club is very fortunate to have members who are so enthusiastic about this, the organisation which promotes and cultivates all the worthwhile aspects of our culture – our Gaelic games, language, history, singing, dancing, drama and music. So it’s with great gratitude that we honour our Scór representatives & organisers. Our chief organiser & Scór officer Niamh Quinn will deliver her annual report later.

***************

Handball

is still going strong in the area thanks to the efforts of the local Bawn Handball Club. We congratulate Eugene McGeough had a very successful 2012. The young man began by winning the County Under 16 Championsnip this year. He then went on to win out in Ulster. His winning ways continued, proving victorious in the All-Ireland semi final. Having come such a long way, Eugene was unlucky to be beaten in the All Ireland final having given an excellent account of himself against a very strong opponent who had won out in the USA. Congratulations Eugene on a memorable 2012!

****************

Official Website

May 2012 saw the launch of www.lattongaa.com with a wealth of information accessible to all club members, officers, parents & supporters worldwide. You can now keep up to date with all the clubs current affairs including Fixtures and Results of our Adult & Juvenile teams, Match Reports, Club Events & Scór. There’s an extensive Photo Gallery as well as a detailed Club History recalling each decade since the foundation of the O'Rahilly club in 1917.

****************

GAA Presidents Award

On Friday 16th March 2012 Club Honorary President Tommy Bates received the highest accolade that can be bestowed on a member of Cumann Luthcleas Gael, Gradaim an Uachtaráin, in recognition of his long & outstanding services to the GAA. Tommy began his playing career in 1947 which continued up to 1966, captaining Latton to the 1954 Junior Football Championship & 1955 Hackett Cup from the halfback line. He also won Dr.Ward Cup medals in 1959 & 1962 and a Brennan Cup Medal in 1966 as goalkeeper. Moving into club administration, Tommy served for a period of 28 years as Club Chairman overseeing a period of enormous development for the club, which included the purchase of the land, now the site of the O’Rahilly GAA club facilities. During this time Tommy also acted as an Adult & Juvenile Team Manager, Groundsman, Kit Man, Referee & Linesman. On April 20th last, the club honoured Tommy with a special presentation on what was a memorable night in O’Rahilly GAA Centre.

****************

All-Ireland championship preview night

On Saturday 12th May in the GAA social club we held a very successful preview night for the 2012 championship. The large crowd was treated to a great night's entertainment by stars off the GAA past and present. Thank you to compare for the night Mark Sidebottom whose knowledge of the GAA and quick wit made the night so enjoyable. Organised by Ken Farmer & Owen Lennon, special guests included Oisin mc Conville, Enda McGinley, Bryan Cullen & Darren Hughes.

****************

Fundraising & Club Merchandise

August 17th saw the launch of our second anniversary Friends of Latton brochure which includes photos and information on what has been a very productive year   for the club. We also had our new club merchandise on display which can be bought from Lennon's drapers Cootehill.

Congratulations to all fundraising efforts in 2012. We are deeply indebted to the individual commitment to organisation and the favourable reaction of club members, players and indeed non-members as we strive to realise the clubs ambitions. Back in June 2010 saw the launch of the ‘Friends of Latton’ campaign. The chairman of the Finance committee, Brendan Fitzpatrick assembled & motivated a hardworking team of sellers who rose to the challenge in what was a difficult task at the time. Thanks to their efforts the campaign has proved a great success.

The footballers had their own fundraiser in July in the form of a very successful race night. They’ve also undertaken to raise vital funds again in 2013 in appreciation for the resources provided for them by the committee.

Particular thanks also to the Lotto committee for the hard work that goes into the smooth running of the clubs weekly draw and to those who personally contributed in any way to the club finances in the form of sponsorship & donations in 2012.

Club referee

Sincere thanks to Mark Hughes for giving up his time to be our referee for the year. We’ve struggled over the past number of years to secure a consistent referee so the club is grateful for Mark’s dedication.

On the pitch we’re grateful to our coaches, mentors and players for their dedication and hard work over the last 12 months.

A G M
Our A G M will be held in the club rooms on Thursday 13th December at 7-30 pm sharp. As everyone knows there is a lot of work and effort involved in running and keeping a football club going from week to week, it is unfair to expect the same small number of people to do all the work when such a large number of children and adults use the facilities. So why not come along and help support our club and join in the review of the past year.

Reserve Football
We played Monaghan Harps in a playoff on Tuesday night last, played in very wet and windy conditions both teams worked hard and the small crowd were treated to a hard hitting but sporting game of football. Playing against the wind in the first half the Latton defence worked very hard and at the break only trailed Monaghan by 2pts. Monaghan 0-7 Lattton 0-5. Monaghan scored a goal early in the second half but the Latton players responded well and with the help off the strong wind kicked some great long range points. A great team effort by Latton that saw eight different players score helped us hold on for a 1pt win at the end. Latton 0-14 Monaghan 1-10. We will now play Clontibret for the last semi-final spot, this game will be played in Cloghan on Tuesday 2nd of October. Team: K, Hughes 2pts. K, Lynch. J, Kingston 1pt. K,Farrelly. J,Nixon. * Senior Football
We played Truagh in a relegation battle on Saturday evening last, September 22nd. The latton team put in a solid first half performance with H Mc Elroy & B O' Brien looking sharp and kicking some good points, we went into the break leading 7pts to 3pts. Truagh worked hard to get back into the game and with 5min to go the score was locked at 8pts each. A fine O Coyle point helped lift Latton and thankfully we held on to win by 2pts. These 2pts were very important as we have two tough matches remaining. We play Ballybay this Saturday away. Our last game in the league is at home to Blayney on Saturday 6th Oct. Team: S Farmer, J Kingston, E Lennon, O Coyle 1pt, S Fitzpatrick, K Duffy, P Fitzpatrick, O Lennon 1pt, A Farmer, S Mc Elroy, B O' Brien 2pts, P Shannon, S Coyle 2pts, T Connolly, H Mc Elroy. U-14 Shield Final
The juvenile competitions came to an end for Latton on Saturday last when we were narrowly beaten by Doohamlet in the shield final, played in ideal conditions in Cremartin, Latton got off to a great start in the first quarter scoring 1-4 in the first 10min but a lack of concentration before the break let Doohamlet in for a goal to leave the score level 1-4 each at the break. Doohamlet were the better team in the second 15min out scoring Latton 5pts to 2pts. The third quarter was a high scoring affair with both teams playing great football and taking their goal chances well, Latton out scored Doohamlet 2-6 to 2-4 but still went into the last quarter trailing by a point Latton 3-12 Doohamlet 3-13. In a tense last quarter the lead changed hands a number of times but unfortunately at the final whistle we came out the wrong end of the score, Latton 4-15 Doohamlet 3-19. Team: D Quinn, B Morris, D Mc Cabe, D Quinn, C Lennon, L Mullen, C Mc Cabe, D Hughes, K Lennon, S Duffy, L Quinn, N Maguire, C Corrigan. Thank you to team management JJ Doherty & Shane Coyle for all their hard work and commitment to this team all year.

Senior Football Championship
What a difference a year makes, this time last year we were celebrating after beating Ballybay in the semi-final and looking forward to the county final. This week we are licking our wounds and feeling sorry for ourselves after been comprehensively beaten by Ballybay last Sunday in Clones. Ballybay got off to a great start scoring 2-2 in the first 5mins, when Latton conceded a third goal after 15mins they had a mountain to climb to get back into the game. Half-time score Latton 0-4 Ballybay 3-5. The Latton players worked hard in the second half and got back to within 5pts of Ballybay but two more goals in the last 10min put the game beyond Lattons reach. Ballybay 5-8 Latton 0-13. We play Truagh away in the league on Sat evening.

Minor Football
We played Magheracloone in a Play-off for the last place in the semi-final line up. Our minor team learned a very harsh lesson on Sat that you have to play right to the final whistle, as they were winning by 5pts with 4min to play and finished up losing by 3pts. Played in ideal conditions in Corduff the spectators were treated to a good open fast game of football. E Mc Geogh got Latton of to a great start hitting the back of the net after 8min. But M'cloone hit back with some good scores to keep them in touch. When C, Rice scored Lattons second goal 2min before half time we should have went in 3pts up but poor defending let M'cloone in for a goal on the stroke of half time. When R Conlon scored our third goal early in the second half to put us 5pts up Latton looked to have the game under control, this was a lead we would keep to the last minutes of the game when we took our eye off the ball and conceded 2-2 in the last 4mins. Final score Latton 3-12 M'cloone 3-15. Team: P Black, P Mc Guinness, K Lynch, K Shannon,M Farrelly, A Mc Guire, G Mc Elory, M Duffy 1pt, J Mc Elory 4pts, T Lynch 2pts, C Rice 1-0, R Conlon 1-0, C Lynch, D Mc Elory 1pt, E Mc Geough 1-0, D Quinn, D J Mc Mahon 1pt. * Senior Football
Our dream off back to back titles is still alive after a hard fought 2pt victory over Currin on Sunday last. Played in ideal conditions in Aughnamullen Latton got off to a poor start when the defence went to sleep and concede a goal after just 6min. Latton struggled to get the breaking ball in the first half and went in a point down at half time 7pts to 1-5. Like last week we played our best football in the second half with Owen and Aidan dominating midfield. Latton got a penalty 2min into the second half but a great save from the Currin goalkeeper denied Hugh Mc Elory a goal. Latton kicked some great points with 11 of their 14 scores coming from play. Latton 0-14 Currin 1-9. Full match report in sports section. We play Currin again this Sunday at home in the league throw in at 12 o, clock. Ballybay will be our opposition in the semi-final of the championship, the game will be played on Sunday 17th Sept time and venue to be decided. We have been invited to play in the Kilmacud 7s on Saturday 22nd the day before the all-Ireland final.

U-12 final
Any day we beat our local rivals Ballybay is a good day but it is especially sweet when it is in a final. This young team showed our seniors the way forward with a great 11pt win in the division 3 final. Latton Played with the wind in the first half but it was Ballybay who got off to a great start scoring 1-1 in the first couple of minutes, as the game progressed Latton started to win more possession around the middle of the field with the forwards causing Ballybay all sorts of trouble with some great runs and some top class finishing. Against the wind in the second half the Latton defence worked hard to keep a strong Ballybay team at bay forcing them to shoot from long range, with 5 min left and only 2pts in front Latton got a little bit of luck with the ball finishing up in the back off the net from a long ball in from midfield. This helped lift the Latton team who went on to score two more goals in the last couple of minutes. Well done to all the team who worked and trained hard all year and deserved there victory on the day. This is the second year this team has won silver ware and a special word of thanks has to go to team management Martin Duffy & Peter West for all their hard work and commitment to this team and juvenile football in Latton. Team: K Duffy. S Black. T Mc Philips. E Mc Philips. J Roe. S Duffy. S West. S Slevin. A Mulligan. D Dempsy. N Maguire. P Hughes. K Hughes. E Duffy. C Corrigan. A Mc Philips. J Mc Cabe. C Mc Cabe. * Senior Football Championship
V-Truagh. The result of a game we had to win to keep our season alive was in doubt right up to the last kick of the game, luckily we held on to win by 1pt at the end. Latton started well and when P Shannon put O, Duffy in for a goal after 8 min it looked like we were saving our best football for championship time. Unfortunately some bad shooting, 14 wides in total meant that the supporters were kept on the edge off their seats up to the last kick of the game. A, Farmer put in a great hours work for Latton with some great high fielding and 2pts from play at crucial times helped keep us in the game, P, Shannon and S, Fitzpatrick also worked hard for the latton cause. Full match report in sports section. Team and scorers: S, Farmer. K, Farrelly. D.o'Brien. O, Coyle. S, Fitzpatrick 1pt. K, Duffy. P, Fitzpatrick. S, Mc Elroy. A, Farmer 2pts. P, Shannon. U-12
This great little team are following on the success of last year by reaching the final of this year's league. In a great all-round team performance the result never looked in doubt with the Latton defence holding Killanny to 5 scores. With Latton domination midfield the forwards took advantage off the possession we had and kicked some great scores. A, Mulligan & D, Dempsey showed our senior players how to take a score between them getting 5-8. Latton 5-13 Killanny 4-01. We are due to play Ballybay in the final on Sat 1st Sept, time and venue to be decided.

V-magheracloone Tue 14th, in a low scoring first half Latton found scores hard to get and went in losing 0-4 to 1-2 at half time. A much improved performance in the second half that saw county minor D Mc Elory score 1-4 helped Latton to a 4pt lead going into injury time, unfortunately a lack of concentration in the Latton defence allowed Magheracloone in for 1-1 late in injury time for the game to finish in a draw. Latton 1-9 Magheracloone 2-6. Team & scorers : P Black, P Mc Guinness, K Lynch, K Shannon,M Farrelly, A Mc Guire, G Mc Elory, M Duffy 1pt, J Mc Elory 2pts, T Lynch, C Rice, R Conlon 1pt, C Lynch, D Mc Elory 1-5, E Mc Geough, D Quinn, D J Mc Mahon, S Mc Cabe, G Mc Elory, J Black. Latton struggled from the start and went in losing 6pts to 1pt at half time, the second half did not start much better with Clontibret getting two early points, Latton kicked some good points as the half progressed but were not able to take the goal chances when they came there way. Clontibret finished the stronger team winning by 4pts. Latton 0-7 Clontibret 0-11. Hopefully things will improve for our game against Truagh in Scotstown this Sat evening 18th.
