Senior Championship - Saturday 30th August

Clontibret 2-13 Latton 0-8

By the time Clontibret lost the services of top scorer Conor McManus to a black card he had registered eight points, seven from frees, to give his side the platform to push on for victory. Latton did rallied briefly following McManus’s demise but Clontibret finished strongly for an unanswered two goals and a point in the final five minutes to win comfortably and become the first team to book their place in the semifinals. The first half was really the Conor McManus show in that he registered six of his side’s points to give them a six points cushion at the break and they continued to dominate the exchanges in the second-half with the nearest Latton came to them was when they reduced the lead to 4 points approaching the end of the third quarter. That however was as good as it was to get with goals by Brian Greenan and Dessie Mone killing off the Latton challenge completely. Scorers: Clontibret: C McManus 0-8 (7f), B Greenan 1-1, D Mone 1-0, D Mooney, C Boyle, K Greenan and F Mone 0-1 each. Gormley uPVC Senior Football Championship Semi-Final

 Ballybay 5-8 Latton 0-13                              16/9/12

Ballybay qualified for their first SFC Final in 25 years – and avenged last year’s heart-breaking semi-final defeat in the process – when they crushed Latton in Sunday’s last-four clash at St. Tiernach’s Park. An amazing start which saw Ballybay hit 2-2 in the first four minutes and 3-4 in the opening quarter set up a one-sided game and although defending champions Latton rallied to kick six of the first seven points after the restart, the league leaders’ goal-scoring touch returned to put the result beyond doubt.

Latton are renowned for being difficult to score goals against, but Colin and Hugh Malone, Paul Finlay, Christopher McGuinness and Brian McCabe all found the net for Ballybay, who had nine scorers in total. McGuinness, Finlay, Drew and Ryan Wylie, Tommy O’Neill and Colin Malone were to the fore for Ballybay, while Owen Duffy and Shane and Owen Coyle tried their best to inspire Latton.

Paul Finlay tapped over a close-range free for a foul on Ryan Wylie to kick off Ballybay’s dream start and he quickly added a point from play after taking a pass from Fergal McArdle. The Pearse Brothers moved five clear when a point-attempt from Thomas Kerr dropped on the edge of the square, where Hugh Malone punched it to the net. Finlay then burst onto a pass from Colin Malone to blast home Ballybay’s second goal and although Shane Coyle got Latton off the mark with a point from play, it was only a momentary respite from the Ballybay onslaught.

Shane McQuillan linked up with Christopher McGuinness to kick a point, before McGuinness caught a long pass from Finlay and raced past his man to send it across the face of goal for Colin Malone to fist home from close range. A quickly-taken sideline kick from Colin Malone set up Kerr to open up a 12-point gap, but a rare Latton attack involving Owen Duffy, Patrick Shannon and Owen Coyle created a point for Shane Coyle.

Hugh McElroy converted a 30-metre free for a foul on Owen Duffy, but Ballybay’s counter-attacking prowess was shown when Brent Wylie intercepted a Kieran Duffy pass intended for an unmarked Shane Coyle and they broke forward at pace for McGuinness to kick his first point. A well-taken point by Owen Duffy, following a short free from Hugh McElroy, gave Latton the last score of the first half, but they still changed ends trailing by 3-5 to 0-4.

Owen Duffy raced through on a trademark run to kick the first point of the second half and Bernard O’Brien soon added a point, but Latton failed to take a chance to get back into the game when Seán Gorman saved from Shannon, who had been put through by good approach play by Kieran Duffy and Shane Coyle. Hugh McElroy tapped over a 13-metre free for a foul on Edmund Lennon to continue Latton’s encouraging start to the half, but a great score from Christopher McGuinness kept Ballybay well clear.

Latton’s hopes of an unlikely comeback were raised when Shane Coyle converted a brace of 20-metre frees for fouls on Owen Duffy and Thomas Connolly, who added a good point from play to cut their deficit to five. Ballybay responded, however, with a fisted point from Tommy O’Neill and they struck a killer blow when a lightning-quick counter involving McQuillan and Drew and Brent Wylie ended with McGuinness scything through the Latton defence and sending a clinical finish beyond Seán Farmer. Ballybay were in dreamland just over ten minutes from time when a clever pass from O’Neill put Brian McCabe through for a powerful shot to the net for their fifth major.

Shane Coyle tapped over a 13-metre free for a foul on O’Brien and Shannon kicked a point from play, but Shane McGuinness landed a point with his first touch after being introduced for Ballybay. The last score went to Latton when an Owen Duffy effort went over via the crossbar, but that took nothing away from a stunning win for Ballybay, who will now be full of confidence for the meeting with Clontibret next month; the Pearse Brothers’ first county final since 1987.

Gormley uPVC Senior Football Championship - Quarter Final

Latton 0-14 Currin 1-9

We kept our defence of the Senior Football Championship title on track after surviving a scare against Currin in Aughnamullen on Sunday, September 2nd. Currin put it up to us in the first half, helped by an early goal by Stephen Smyth, but Latton’s experience eventually told, as they took control in midfield after the restart. Latton had six wides in the second half, as well as a Hugh McElroy penalty which was well saved by Currin goalkeeper Fergal Connolly, but they did enough to edge through to a last-four meeting with neighbours Ballybay. Owen Lennon, McElroy, Aidan Farmer, Edmund Lennon, Owen Duffy and Shane and Owen Coyle were on form for Latton, while Smyth, Ciarán McCaffrey and Jack McCarron led the way for Currin.

Latton were first off the mark with a point from Owen Duffy, but Currin took the lead on five minutes when a quickly-taken free by Jack McCarron set up Stephen Smyth to score what would prove to be the game’s only goal. McCarron added a good point from play before winning a 20-metre free for Smyth to convert and move Currin four clear, but Bernard O’Brien got one back for Latton after Patrick Shannon had knocked a high centre from Aidan Farmer down to Hugh McElroy. McElroy added a point from a 45-metre free after a foul on Owen Duffy and he went close to finding the net when he raced onto an Owen Lennon pass, only to be denied by Currin keeper Fergal Connolly.

Smyth linked up with Philip O’Callaghan to kick a fine point from play for Currin, but Owen Duffy replied with a well-taken left-footed point, before Shane Coyle and Smyth swapped points from 25-metre frees, following fouls on McElroy and Philip O’Callaghan. O’Callaghan added a nice point to restore Currin’s three-point advantage, but Aidan Farmer kicked a big point off the outside of his boot to keep Latton in touch and McElroy added a point after a quickly-taken free by O’Brien to leave just a point between the teams at half-time: Currin 1-5 Latton 0-7.

Just over a minute of the second half was played when an Owen Lennon shot dropped dangerously on the edge of the small square, where Shane Coyle was pushed for a Latton penalty. McElroy’s spot-kick was low and hard towards the corner, but Connolly got down to his left to make a great save. McElroy got on the end of a high ball from Aidan Farmer to land a good point and Owen Lennon quickly tagged on a great score, following a pass from Shane Coyle, to edge Latton ahead.

Smyth replied with a point from play before converting a 30-metre free for a foul on Stephen Beattie to regain the lead for Currin, but McElroy responded with a similar effort after a foul on Shane Coyle and a huge point from distance by Owen Lennon gave Latton a lead which they held from there to the finish. McElroy converted another 30-metre free for a foul on Shane Coyle to double Latton’s lead, before Coyle hit a point from play at the end of a move involving Kieran Duffy and O’Brien.

A brace of frees by McCarron, after fouls on Kieran Kearns and Philip O’Callaghan, made it a one-point game with two minutes remaining, but O’Brien restored the two-point gap after McElroy had caught a long pass from Farmer. Latton will now take on Ballybay in the semi-finals for the second year in a row, while Currin will need to reproduce this sort of form if they are to make an unlikely escape from the relegation trap-door.

Latton: S Farmer; J Kingston, E Lennon, O Coyle; S Fitzpatrick, K Duffy, P Fitzpatrick; O Lennon (Capt., 0-2), A Farmer (0-1); P Shannon, O Duffy (0-2), T Connolly; S Coyle (0-2, 1f), H McElroy (0-5, 3f), B O’Brien (0-2). Sub: S McElroy for Shannon (40 mins).

Gormley uPVC Senior Football Championship - Latton 0-11 Monaghan Harps 1-5

Our hopes of winning back to back championships are still alive after a hard fought but deserved win over Monaghan Harps in Inniskeen. Latton got over the handicap of being reduced to 14 players after just six minutes of this sudden-death quarter-final to go on to book their place in the semi final at the expense of a disappointing Monaghan Harps side in what was overall a fairly low key, scrappy encounter. Dermot O'Brien got his marching orders in the sixth minute following an off the ball strike on David Hughes and it was something that took Latton, who are the reigning champions, some time to recover from as they were under pressure for long periods in the first half but Monaghan Harps failed to push home their numerical advantage and were just ahead by the minimum at the break, 1-3 to 0-5, Nicholas Treanor with the goal in the 24th minute. On the resumption Latton started with renewed purpose and laid the foundations for victory in a strong third-quarter that saw them hit six
points without reply between the second and 15th minutes, two each form Bernard O'Brien and Hugh McElroy, the latter from frees and one each from Aidan Farmer who was a powerhouse in midfield, and Thomas Connolly to open a five points lead. Latton didn't score in the final quarter but their defence held firm particularly Edmund Lennon at full-back and all Monaghan Harps could do was register two points as they lacked the penetration to get in for the goal they needed to resurrect their prospects.
Latton: Sean Farmer, Edmund Lennon, Dermot O'Brien, Owen Coyle, Steven Fitzpatrick, Kieran Duffy, James Kingston, Owen Lennon, Aidan Farmer 0-1, Patrick Shannon, Owen Duffy 0-1, Thomas Connolly 0-1, Shane Coyle, Hugh McElroy 0-4 (3f), Bernard O'Brien 0-3. Subs: Stephen McElroy for P Shannon, Brendan Lennon for S Coyle.
Monaghan Harps: Mark Hughes, Niall Hahessy, Stephen Driver, Paul Rushe, Gareth Treanor, Cpnor
Galligan, Aidan Og McAnespie, Peter Coyle, Neil McAdam, Paddy Connolly 0-1, Nicholas Treanor 1-0, Nicholas Scott, Donal Hahessy 0-3 (3f), Shane Smyth, David Hughes 0-1. Subs: Emmet McArdle for G

Gormley uPVC Senior Football Championship - Latton 1-9 Truagh 1-8

We survived a scare from Truagh to get their SFC hopes back on track with a one-point win at a sunny Scotstown on Saturday evening August 18th. Latton, who were without suspended duo Owen and Edmund Lennon, burst out of the starting blocks with an early goal by Owen Duffy, but a Niall Coyle strike had Truagh a point up at half-time. The teams remained neck-and-neck throughout the second period, but Latton called on all their experience to add this one to their growing list of narrow championship wins. Aidan Farmer, Owen Duffy, Stephen Fitzpatrick and Shane and Owen Coyle did most to see Latton over the line, while Keith Sheerin, Pádraig and Seán McKenna and Niall Feely led Truagh’s challenge.

Bernard O’Brien gave Latton an early lead and they looked to be well and truly on their way in the ninth minute when Patrick Shannon got on the end of a cross-field pass by Hugh McElroy to release Owen Duffy, who fired home the game’s opening goal. Pádraig McKenna got Truagh on the scoreboard in the 12th minute with a well-taken left-footed point after he had been well-placed by Seán McKenna, before Christopher McKenna linked up with Niall Feely to kick an equally good point from distance.

Shane Coyle got a point back for Latton, but Truagh drew level on 18 minutes when Christopher and Seán McKenna and Damian McRory combined to release Niall Coyle to squeeze a shot into the corner of the Latton net. Seán McKenna could have had another three-pointer after good work by Pádraig McKenna and Coyle put him through, but his shot was deflected over the bar by Latton keeper Seán Farmer. Seán McKenna doubled Truagh’s lead after taking a pass from McRory, but Aidan Farmer finished well at the end of a move involving Hugh McElroy and Shane Coyle to leave Latton trailing by just a point at the end of the first half: 1-4 to 1-3.

It took less than a minute for Truagh to get the first point of the second half, courtesy of Pádraig McKenna, but Hugh McElroy tapped over a 20-metre free for a foul on Bernard O’Brien to keep Latton in touch and Owen Duffy raced through after a one-two with his brother Kieran to equalise. John McCarron regained Truagh’s lead following a long ball in from Rory Treanor to Pádraig McKenna and although Shane Coyle levelled it up after good work by Stephen Fitzpatrick and Shannon, a foul on Seán McKenna allowed Pádraig McKenna to regain Truagh’s lead via a 30-metre free.

Aidan Farmer equalised for the fourth and final time at the end of a counter-attack involving Thomas Connolly and sub Brendan Lennon, before McElroy converted a 30-metre free for a foul on O’Brien to hand the champions a slender lead going into the last ten minutes. Mark Counihan was inches away from bringing Truagh back onto level terms within a couple of minutes of his introduction, but his shot hit the left upright and the follow-up effort from McRory went wide, while Feely made a great block at the other end to deny Shannon.

Stephen Fitzpatrick got forward to move Latton two clear with four minutes left, but another 30-metre free by Pádraig McKenna, after a foul on McRory, ensured a nervy finish. Latton held on, however, to set up a meeting with Monaghan Harps this saturday august 25th in Inniskeen at 5.15pm.

Beaten by Clontibret on Sunday August 12th was not the result we were looking for in preparation for our championship match next weekend. Latton struggled from the start and went in losing 6pts to 1pt at half time, the second half did not start much better with Clontibret getting two early points, Latton kicked some good points as the half progressed but were not able to take the goal chances when they came there way. Clontibret finished the stronger team winning by 4pts. Latton 0-7 Clontibret 0-11. Hopefully things will improve for our Championship game against Truagh in Scotstown this Saturday evening August 18th.

We played Monaghan at home on july 25th, played in very slippy conditions both teams found scores hard to get. Monaghan got off to a great start scoring 1-1 in the first 5 min, but could only add two more points in the rest of the half. The highlight of the half for Latton was a great goal by O, Duffy just before half time to send them in leading 1-4 to1-3. The Latton players worked hard in the second half and in the end won by 2 pts. Latton 1-9 Monaghan 1-7

On Friday July 6th our senior team played away to Carrick, on a bad evening for football our lads never got going and lost by 3pts in the end. Carrick played with the wind in the first half and were 1-2 up after 6 minutes. Latton didn't get there first score till the 21st minute. Brendan Lennon scored a goal before half time to keep latton in the game. Things didn't get any better in the second half with us struggling to get possession around the middle and when Carrick scored their second goal there was no way back for Latton. Carrick 2-8 Latton 1-8.

Sunday 10th June (League)

  Castleblayney 1-13 2-12 Latton     Magheracloone 1-13 2-8 Scotstown

We played Blayney in Oram on Sunday 10th. In a low scoring first half Latton struggled at times with the pace of the Blayney forwards. A P Shannon goal after a mistake by the Blayney goalkeeper kept Latton in touch at half time. Half time score Blayney 1-4 Latton 1-2. Blayney had a player sent off after receiving a second yellow card 5 min into the second half. Latton used the extra man well and a H Mc Elory goal after a great pass from S Coyle give latton a lead that they worked hard to hold on to until the end. Blayney 1-13 Latton 2-11.

In what was a fast, hard hitting game a draw was probably a fair result at the end. Scores were hard got in the first half and an O, Duffy goal was all that separated the teams at half time. Ballybay started the second half brightly and scored 1-3 without reply. It took 17 min for Latton to register their first score of the second half. Latton finished the second half the stronger team and were 1pt up in injury time but a bad pass out of defence let Ballybay in for the equalising point. Latton 1-9 Ballybay 1-9

Dismal weather in Scotshouse along with a dismal performance saw us go down by 2 points to the Senior newcomers. A hungrier, more determined Currin put in a gutsy first half shift despite being against a very strong wind. This was to prove the winning of the game as Latton failed to fully capitalise from the breeze, leaving the half-time score Currin 4 Latton 5. The second half saw Currin further rise to the occasion notching up 4 more points to Lattons solitary point. The game lacked footballing quality from the start & with takles flying there was inevitably a red card shown to both sides with the dismissal of Stephen Fitzpatrick & Dick Clerkin. In a performance to forget we wish speedy recoveries to both Thomas Connolly & Jason Nixon who both picked up injuries on the day.

Latton played with a strong wind in the first half and worked hard for their scores against a very defensive Truagh team, we kicked some good scores and lead by 6pts at half time. Latton got off to a great start in the second half with two Owen Coyle points in the first five minutes. Truaghs first score of the game came 10 minutes into the second half when they scored a goal from a breaking ball after a great save from Sean Framer. Latton responded well and hit two points to put the game beyond Truaghs reach. In a very sporting game of football all scores came from play.
